Session Highlights:
- Research Overview by the Institute for Work & Health – Dr. Smith will provide an overview of research conducted by IWH that has focused on disability management and the return-to-work process. He will discuss differences between the return-to-work process for work-related conditions that are physical compared to those which are mental, as well as work describing unique aspects of disability management and accommodation for non-work-related conditions that are invisible and episodic. There will be time for questions.
- Professional Standards for Certified Disability Management Professionals (CDMP) – Dr. Sulsky will summarize the results of a two-wave analysis of the Professional Standards for CDMPs including edits and possible inclusion of new standards. Dr. Sulsky will share the method which involved an initial review by subject matter experts and 169 CDMPs who rated the relevance of each of the Professional Standard items for practicing CDMPs. In addition to summarizing the various analyses, Dr. Sulsky will briefly discuss implications emanating from the research findings. There will be an opportunity for members to offer comments or to ask Dr. Sulsky questions arising from the presentation.

Featured Speakers:
Dr. Peter Smith is president and senior scientist at the Institute for Work & Health (IWH) in Toronto, and a professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. He has extensive experience conducting research related to work injury and its consequences using large population-based surveys and administrative workers’ compensation data. His key research interests include gender and sex differences in the relationship between work and health; the measurement of work exposures, in particular the psychosocial work environment, and how labour market exposures contribute to health inequalities at the population level.
Dr. Lorne Sulsky, PhD, is a Full Professor of Human Resource Management (HRM) at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association and Past-President of the Canadian Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Dr. Sulsky has consulted widely with international organizations in the broad area of HRM. He previously served as the Director of HRM for a non-profit agency, and worked as a statistical analyst for Frito Lay Inc. Dr. Sulsky has had a long-standing professional relationship with NIMDAR over the past 30 years performing a variety of professional services – including a psychometric assessment of the NIDMAR disability management auditing tool.
Dr. Sulsky has published and presented numerous papers in the broad area of HRM and is the co-author of the Sulsky and Smith 2005 text entitled “Work Stress” (Thomson Wadsworth Publishers). He is past editor of the Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science, one of three journals published by the Canadian Psychological Association. Currently, he serves on the Editorial Boards of four academic journals including top journals such as the Journal of Applied Psychology where he is a Consulting Editor.
